For E(0,z)=eiϕ(z) and sufficiently smooth real phase, expand free paraxial propagation as E=E0+ixE0′′/(2k)−x2E0′′′′/(8k2)+O(x3). Taking the squared modulus gives the displayed intensity. Negative phase curvature initially focuses the field. With ϕ=cosz, I=1+(x/k)cosz+(x/k)2cos2z+O(x3), with transverse length scaled so the modulation wavenumber is one. Period-averaged intensity stays one.
