Potassium cyanide is the salt KCN, containing potassium and cyanide ions. The cyanide carbon-nitrogen unit is distinct from a covalently attached nitrile group in an organic molecule.
Cyanide can act as a nucleophile and a ligand, while protonation changes it into hydrogen cyanide. Its reactions therefore depend on both coordination chemistry and acid-base speciation.
