A predictor and corrector give distinct approximations from the same local history. Their difference, scaled by their leading error constants and orders, can estimate a local defect. Raw differences without that calibration need not estimate the corrected solution's error. Variable-step multistep methods also require updated coefficients and controlled history handling.
