For the incompressible velocity ux=αy, uy=−βx in a shearing sheet, advection produces −αβ(x,y) and the Coriolis acceleration produces (2Ωβx,2Ωαy). Including the radial tide 2ΩSx gives p/ρ=(Ax2+By2)/2+C. A material ellipse has β=r2α. A vortex patch is immersed in surrounding fluid, so this pressure need not vanish on its boundary; imposing that condition would describe a different free-boundary problem.
