For XTX=VΛVT, ridge regression multiplies the fitted response along the ith normalized sample principal component by the shrinkage factor Λii​/(Λii​+λ). Directions with variance much larger than λ are nearly retained, while directions with variance much smaller than λ are nearly removed.
