Radiative temperature gradient (${\nabla }_{\mathrm{rad}}$)

The radiative temperature gradient is the logarithmic pressure gradient ${\nabla }_{\mathrm{rad}}=d\log T/d\log P$ required to carry the flux by radiation. Convection begins when it exceeds the relevant adiabatic gradient.
