For conservative binary mass transfer and RL∝a(Md/M)1/3,
ζL=2q−35,q=MaMd.
(1)
The conservation of angular momentum gives dloga/dlogMd=−2(1−q). Since a mass loss has dlogMd<0, the donor moves inside its lobe when ζad>ζL. An ideal fully convective donor with ζad=−1/3 is therefore stable for q<2/3 and unstable for q>2/3 under these assumptions.
