For L(f)=f′(0)+23f(0)−2f(1)+21f(2) on C3[0,2], the Peano kernel is
K(t)={t−43t2,41(2−t)2,0≤t≤1,1≤t≤2.
(1)
The Taylor expansion with integral remainder gives L(f)=∫02K(t)f(3)(t)dt, because L annihilates polynomials of degree at most two. Since K≥0 and ∫02K=1/3, the sharp bound is ∣L(f)∣≤31∥f(3)∥∞. Equality holds for f(x)=x3/6.
