A birefringent plate with retardation Γ=tΔn gives I/IP=sin2(2α)sin2(πΓ/λ). At non-extinction azimuths, wavelengths satisfying Γ=mλ are removed by a crossed analyser. At a principal-axis azimuth every wavelength is extinguished.
