For simple shear flow u=(γ˙y,0,0), put s=γ˙ and ℓ=λs. The steady deviatoric stress is
σ=1+ℓ2μsℓ101−ℓ0000.
(1)
This follows by setting ωxy=−s, ωyx=s in the corotational Maxwell fluid equation: σxx=λsσxy, σyy=−λsσxy, and σxy+λs(σxx−σyy)/2=μs. Hence the shear viscosity is μ/(1+λ2s2), which exhibits shear thinning, while N1=2μλs2/(1+λ2s2) and N2=−N1/2. These differences are independent of the isotropic pressure.
