For finite nonnegative adapted processes Yj, set τa=inf{n:∑j≤nYj>a} and Un=∑j<nYj. Stopping this one-step-lagged sum gives An=a−Un∧τa∈[0,a], with An+1−An=−Yn1{τa>n}. The latter is nonpositive and measurable at time n, so A is a nonnegative supermartingale. The overshooting increment is excluded, which is essential to nonnegativity.
