Use depth d, time d2/κ, stream-function scale κ, temperature perturbation scale ΔT, and magnetic flux-function scale B0d. With u=(−ψz,0,ψx), B=(−Az,0,Ax) and A=x+χ, advection is J(ψ,f)=ψxfz−ψzfx. The temperature background contributes ψx to the heat equation and the imposed vertical field contributes ψz to the perturbation induction equation. Taking the curl of the magnetohydrodynamic momentum equation gives a magnetic term σζQJ(A,∇2A), where σ=ν/κ, ζ=η/κ, R=gαΔTd3/(νκ) and Q=B02d2/(μ0ρνη).
