Replacing a Lagrangian by
L′(q,q˙,t)=L(q,q˙,t)+dtdF(q,t)
(1)
adds only the endpoint term F(q(t2),t2)−F(q(t1),t1) to the action. Fixed-endpoint variations therefore give the same Euler--Lagrange equations.
