For a nonnegative submartingale with maximum Mt, the first-moment maximal estimate is λP(Mt≥λ)≤E[Xt1{Mt≥λ}]. Integrate 2λ times the tail probability only up to R, obtaining E(Mt∧R)2≤2E[Xt(Mt∧R)]. The Cauchy-Schwarz inequality gives ∥Mt∧R∥2≤2∥Xt∥2, and monotone convergence gives the result as R→∞. Truncation avoids assuming beforehand that the maximum has a finite second moment.
