For a planar turbulent mixing layer, let Uc=(Ua+Ub)/2, ΔU=Ua−Ub, νT=CΔUδ, δ=SΔUx/Uc, and ξ=S/Cy/δ. The stream function ψ=Uc[y+δC/SF(ξ)] enforces mean incompressibility. Substitution into UUx+VUy=νTUyy gives the displayed ordinary differential equation, with F′(±∞)=±ΔU/(2Uc). When ΔU/Uc is small, its linear approximation is F′′′+ξF′′=0, so F′′ is a Gaussian function and F′ an error function.
