If the galactic distribution function is not restricted to positive relative energy, isotropic velocity integration gives ρ(ψ)=4π2∫−∞ψf(E)ψ−EdE. The same Abel transform argument as Eddington inversion yields the displayed formula, with lower limit −∞. For ρ=ρ0eψ/σ02, substitution ψ=E−σ02s2 gives f(E)=ρ0(2πσ02)−3/2eE/σ02. An escape-energy truncation changes both the density law and the velocity tails.
