Vertical wavenumber ($q$)

Relative to a distinguished propagation coordinate $z$, the vertical wavenumber is the corresponding wavevector component $q$. For a plane wave of wavenumber $k$ making angle $\theta$ with the vertical, $q=k\cos \theta$.
