The unnormalized rotationally symmetric mode is Z40(ρ)=6ρ4−6ρ2+1. It describes balanced primary spherical aberration. The lower-degree terms make it orthogonal to constant piston and quadratic defocus under the disk area measure: direct integration gives ∫01Z40ρdρ=0 and ∫01Z40(2ρ2−1)ρdρ=0.
