Maria Goeppert Mayer was a German-American physicist who made significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics and is best known for her development of the shell nuclear model. She was born on June 28, 1906, in Kattowitz, which was then part of Germany (now Katowice, Poland), and she passed away on February 20, 1972, in San Diego, California.
