The Alfvén frequency is the frequency of an Alfvén wave with wavevector k in a uniform magnetic field B and mass density ρ. For a vertical field and vertical wavenumber k, its square is ωa2=k2Bz2/(μ0ρ). Its competition with orbital shear determines the ideal magnetorotational dispersion relation.
