An experimental particle physicist who contributed to the discovery of the antiproton. A negative particle had to be distinguished from the much more abundant light particles with the same electric charge: momentum selection and velocity-sensitive detectors together established its large mass. Instrument design therefore formed part of identifying the new particle, alongside its production in an accelerator.[ref]
