The equal-time canonical commutation relation is [ϕ(t,x),π(t,y)]=iδ3(x−y) in units ℏ=1, with the two field-field and momentum-momentum commutators zero. The quadratic Hamiltonian operator gives ϕ˙=π and π˙=∇2ϕ−m2ϕ, hence the Klein-Gordon equation as an operator identity.
