The common-envelope energy formalism equates a fraction αCE​ of the released orbital energy to the envelope binding energy, often written Ebind​=GMd​Menv​/(λRd​). It estimates the post-envelope separation but compresses uncertain hydrodynamics into αCE​ and λ.
