Choose a constant positive Hermitian form on . Its underlying flat Kähler metric is translation-invariant and descends through the Euclidean lattice to the compact complex torus . The Dolbeault Hodge decomposition gives a unique Dolbeault Laplacian-harmonic representative of every Dolbeault cohomology class. By the Kähler Laplacian identity, these are also Hodge Laplacian-harmonic.
Choose a constant coframe on . A lifted harmonic form is a sum of constant wedge basis forms with smooth periodic coefficients. For the flat metric, the Hodge Laplacian acts coefficientwise by the scalar constant-coefficient Laplacian. Each coefficient is a harmonic function on a compact flat real torus, hence is constant: integration by parts gives . Conversely every constant-coefficient form is harmonic. Thus the harmonic representatives are exactly the translation-invariant differential forms of type (p, q).
The constant covectors form ; the constant covectors form the space of antilinear maps . Sending a constant wedge form to its cohomology class gives
The map is intrinsic and does not depend on the auxiliary flat metric: that metric proves every class has exactly one constant representative, while the inclusion of constant forms is defined directly by the quotient. The Dolbeault cohomology of a complex torus consists of constant forms, and in particular
For indices outside , both the exterior-power expression and the cohomology group vanish.
The uniformization theorem states that every simply connected Riemann surface is biholomorphic to exactly one of the Riemann sphere , the complex plane , or the unit disc . A surface is uniformized by one of these when that surface is its universal cover. The only surface uniformized by is the sphere itself, because every nonidentity Möbius transformation has a fixed point and therefore cannot act as a deck transformation. The Riemann surfaces uniformized by the complex plane are
Let have a complement containing at least two points. Its universal cover cannot be the sphere because is noncompact. If it were the plane, the covering map would be a nonconstant entire function omitting two values, contrary to the Little Picard theorem. The plane domain with two omitted points is hyperbolic, so
Now put . The spherical possibility occurs only for . By the preceding list, the plane-uniformized possibilities are
which give respectively . Every remaining pair has and must have disc universal cover. Thus the uniformization of a punctured compact Riemann surface gives
For the complex torus , any analytic map lifts through the universal covering map to an entire function . If is constant, so is . Otherwise Little Picard says that omits at most one complex number. For every , its lifts form an infinite coset , so at least one lift is attained by . Hence the holomorphic map from the complex plane to a one-dimensional complex torus satisfies
Finally, and are homeomorphic by
They are not conformally equivalent: a biholomorphism would be a nonconstant bounded entire function, contradicting the Liouville theorem. This proves the claimed example of complex plane and unit disc are homeomorphic but not conformally equivalent.
For a nonconstant holomorphic map between compact connected Riemann surfaces, its degree is
where is the ramification index of a holomorphic map at . The valency theorem makes this sum independent of . The Riemann-Hurwitz formula is
Write . The map is well-defined and biholomorphic, with . Its fixed points satisfy
They are therefore indexed by , so there are four, as in the negation map on a one-dimensional complex torus.
For each choose a small open disc for which . The projection restricts to a homeomorphism
Use followed by a holomorphic coordinate on as a chart on . Choosing instead changes this coordinate by the holomorphic map induced by , so the transition functions are holomorphic. These charts make a Riemann surface and a holomorphic double covering map.
At each omitted fixed point, a centred local coordinate changes by , so the invariant quotient coordinate is . Hence the extension has degree two and exactly four ramification points, each with . Since the complex torus has genus one, Riemann--Hurwitz gives
Thus , in agreement with the general quotient of a one-dimensional complex torus by negation.
Let be a complex torus. A Riemann form on a complex torus is a Hermitian form on whose imaginary part
takes integer values on . Equivalently, is an integral alternating form satisfying
for every nonzero . A polarisation of a complex torus is such a positive Riemann form, or equivalently its integral cohomology class. By the Appell–Humbert theorem, it is the first Chern class of an ample holomorphic line bundle. A polarisation is principal when the homomorphism induced by is an isomorphism.
Choose a small ball whose translates by distinct lattice elements are disjoint. The restrictions of the quotient map to translates of supply holomorphic charts, because every transition map is a complex translation. A closed fundamental parallelepiped is compact and surjects onto the quotient, so the resulting complex torus is compact.
The standard form
is translation invariant and therefore descends uniquely to a form with . It remains closed, of type , and positive, so it is a Kähler form.
A complex torus with period matrix of a complex torus admits a Hodge metric precisely when there is a nonsingular integral skew-symmetric matrix satisfying the displayed conditions. The entries of are the periods of the invariant Kähler form over lattice two-tori. The first condition imposes type , and the second imposes positivity; the factor corresponds to the convention .
Riemann theta function 2026-10-14
For a symmetric matrix with positive definite imaginary part, this theta function converges normally on compact subsets of . It obeys , so its zeros define a divisor on the associated complex torus. If is a curve's normalized period matrix, its zero divisor is a translate of the effective degree- locus, by the Riemann vanishing theorem. A general symmetric positive period matrix need not come from a curve.
For an integral alternating form arising as the imaginary part of a Hermitian form, a semicharacter satisfies . The Appell–Humbert theorem uses this datum together with the Hermitian form to specify a holomorphic line bundle on a complex torus. The ratio of two semicharacters is an ordinary unitary group homomorphism. On the square period lattice, with , all semicharacters are for .
The tangent bundle of a complex torus is holomorphically trivial with a flat Hermitian metric. Apply the curvature formula for a holomorphic subbundle to : its determinant dual has semipositive curvature. For a closed smooth hypersurface, adjunction for a smooth submanifold identifies with the restriction of its divisor line bundle. Thus a positive ambient line bundle remains positive on the hypersurface after tensoring by any nonnegative power of the restricted divisor bundle.
Let be a compact Riemann surface of genus , and remove distinct points. The punctured surface is uniformized by the unit disc exactly when . It is uniformized by the complex plane exactly when is or , corresponding respectively to , and to or a complex torus. The sole spherical case is .
Let be positive and a closed smooth hypersurface in a complex torus. The semipositive canonical bundle of a submanifold of a complex torus makes positive. Since , the restriction of the -th ambient twist is when . Apply the Kodaira vanishing theorem on , and use and its long exact sequence to induct from the positive bundle on the torus. No unproved ambient positivity of is needed.
Weierstrass uniformization by half-period values Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
The Weierstrass elliptic function and its derivative give an isomorphism from a one-dimensional complex torus to a smooth plane cubic, with sent to its identity at infinity. The three nonzero two-torsion points of a complex torus are zeros of . Its triple pole implies that these three zeros are simple. If two half-period values of the Weierstrass elliptic function coincided, would have at least four zeros counted with multiplicity, contradicting its double pole. The three cubic roots are therefore distinct, proving smoothness of an algebraic variety. The degree-two map has fibers , distinguished by away from the half-periods, proving bijectivity. A line pulls back to an elliptic function with a triple pole, and the zero-pole sum of an elliptic function says that its three intersections sum to zero on the torus. This gives exactly the chord-and-tangent group law, including repeated intersections interpreted by intersection multiplicity.
