Positive cone of an ordered group 2026-10-14
The nonnegative cone determines the partial order by . It contains the identity element, is closed under products and conjugation, and intersects its inverse only in the identity. Conversely these conditions define a two-sided invariant partial order. Its strictly positive part omits the identity; conventions for differ, so specify which is intended.
Over , putThese determinant-one matrices satisfy , , and . Conjugation by cycles . Thus is a quaternion group of order eight, normalized by an element of order three. Their generated subgroup has order in , hence order after quotienting by . Its index-five coset action, together with simplicity and perfectness, identifies with the alternating group .
Small subgroups of tetrahedral symmetry Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-10-31
The full symmetry group of a regular tetrahedron is the symmetric group acting on its vertices. Its subgroups with at most six elements have eight types up to conjugation, with the following representative subgroups and counts:A transposition is a reflection through the plane containing the two fixed vertices and the midpoint of the exchanged edge. A double transposition is a half-turn about the axis joining the midpoints of the two exchanged edges. A three-cycle is a one-third-turn about a vertex-to-opposite-face axis. A four-cycle is a quarter-turn composed with a reflection perpendicular to the opposite-edge midpoint axis; it is an improper orthogonal transformation.
The unique Klein four-group containing only double transpositions consists of the three opposite-edge half-turns and the identity element. The other three Klein four-groups consist of two perpendicular mirror reflections, their half-turn product, and the identity element. Each is a stabilizer subgroup of a vertex, including the three rotations and three mirror reflections preserving that vertex.
For completeness, a Klein four-group containing must contain the commuting involution or , yielding the displayed subgroup; one containing no transpositions must contain all three double transpositions. An subgroup has a unique cyclic subgroup of cardinality three, whose unique fixed vertex must therefore be preserved by the entire . These observations and the disjoint cycle decomposition exhaust the types allowed by groups of order at most six. The counts sum to .
A transported planar potential dipole follows the surrounding regular velocity, so its position satisfies the displayed equation after its own singular term is removed. The conjugation comes from the convention . Reflected image parameters are held fixed when taking the spatial derivative, then evaluated at the instantaneous dipole position.
For a unit circular wall, the Milne-Thomson circle theorem gives image potential and therefore . For a horizontal straight wall the image is , giving . For the line , reflected conjugation gives image and hence . In each case the image lies outside the fluid region and makes the wall a streamline; differentiation of the regular image proves the motion formula. Several compatible straight-wall reflections can be summed before the same operation is applied.

Let be a connected compact Lie group, a maximal torus, and its Weyl group. With normalized Haar measures and , every continuous class function satisfies . For a general continuous function, replace by its average . Conjugation from covers the regular elements times, and its real Jacobian determinant is .
Word metric Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The word metric measures how many allowed moves are needed to change one group element into another. For a finite symmetric generating set of a group with , it is the graph distance between vertices of the Cayley graph, equivalentlyHere word length counts letters in a shortest representative of . The path metric on the entire Cayley graph also permits points inside edges; the word metric is its restriction to the group itself.[ref]

The word metric is left invariant:This corresponds to the label-preserving group action on the Cayley graph. Symmetry follows by reversing a shortest graph path; concatenating routes gives the triangle inequality.[ref]

Right invariance can fail in a non-abelian group, because right multiplication replaces by through conjugation. In the free group with , we have , whereas : the latter freely reduced word has three letters. In an abelian group, conjugation fixes each element, so right invariance does hold. Cayley graphs of the integers and word metric balls in the integer lattice give examples where the word metric can be calculated explicitly.
