At wavelengths much longer than the lattice spacing, uj+1−uj≃a∂xu gives L=∫dx[ρ(∂tu)2−K(∂xu)2]/2. The field obeys a wave equation with sound speed v=K/ρ. Its conjugate momentum density is Π=ρ∂tu and canonical quantization gives [u(x),Π(x′)]=iℏδ(x−x′). The lattice remains the ultraviolet cutoff of this long-wave theory.
