For θ¨+2ω0θ˙+ω02θ=F switched on from rest, θ(t)=(F/ω02)[1−(1+ω0t)e−ω0t]. critical damping is the fastest nonoscillatory step response at fixed natural frequency within the ordinary second-order model.

With eiωt phasors, critical damping gives Θ(ω)=F0/(ω0+iω)2, amplitude F0/(ω02+ω2) and phase −2arctan(ω/ω0). The response strongly suppresses alternating currents well above the mechanical frequency.
