Let L be the triangular matrix with Lij=1 for j≤i and zero otherwise. Then (LLT)ij=min(i,j) and detL=1, so the determinant of LLT is one. More generally, for 0=t0<t1<⋯<tn, the matrix with entries min(ti,tj) factors as Ldiag(tk−tk−1)LT and has determinant ∏k(tk−tk−1). This is the finite-dimensional structure behind the Brownian covariance kernel.
