Replacing continuous space, time or fields by finite degrees of freedom permits a numerical forecast. Approximation and truncation errors depend on resolution, algorithms and unresolved scales; they are distinct from observation errors and from roundoff. Refinement reduces a consistent truncation error only when stability and the relevant smoothness assumptions permit convergence.
