For the seismic moment tensor M=e1e2T+e2e1T, source differentiation of the outgoing elastodynamic Green tensor gives AP=nTMn and AS=(I−nnT)Mn. In the x1x2 plane the signed radial P wave and tangential S wave factors are sin2ϕ and cos2ϕ. The full S wave magnitude squared is n12+n22−4n12n22.
