Downsizing denotes the tendency for the characteristic mass of actively star-forming galaxies to decrease with time, together with related evidence that more massive quiescent systems formed their stars earlier or over shorter intervals. It does not assert that their dark-matter haloes assembled earlier: stellar formation and halo or stellar assembly are separate histories.
