In the rigid-backed shear-wave dispersion equation tanθ=−ϵθ/A2−θ2, take fixed (n−1/2)π<A<nπ and let ϵ→0+. The highest intersection approaches the endpoint A. Setting δ=A−θ and using A2−θ2∼2Aδ gives the displayed asymptotic expansion. At A=nπ the appropriate balance is instead δ∼(ϵ2nπ/2)1/3. Near that transition, with Δ=A−nπ, the leading equation is δ2(Δ+δ)=ϵ2nπ/2, where now θ=nπ−δ and Δ+δ>0.
