The magnetic energy of this constant-inductance model is
W=21L1i12+Mi1i2+21L2i22=21iTLi.
(1)
The positive-definite matrix condition makes W≥0. Multiplying the two circuit equations by i1 and i2, then adding, gives the displayed conservation of energy statement: input power Vi1 supplies stored magnetic energy and Joule heating. With zero drive, W˙≤0. After the drive becomes zero, the stored magnetic energy supplies the remaining Joule heating.
