For three non-collinear points with position vectors a,b,c, a nonzero normal vector is
N=(b−a)×(c−a).
(1)
The plane is the set of r satisfying (r−a)⋅N=0. Expanding the cross product and using the scalar triple product gives
r⋅(a×b+b×c+c×a)=a⋅(b×c).
(2)
Non-collinearity is essential: otherwise N=0 and the equation fails to select a unique plane.
