With signed active covariate columns XAs=(sjxj)j∈A and their positive-definite Gram matrix GA=(XAs)TXAs, the displayed direction has unit norm and (XAs)Tu=α1. Thus it makes equal angles with unit-length signed active covariates, and movement along it reduces their signed residual correlations at the common rate α. The regression coefficient direction is dA=diag(sA)w, with inactive components zero.
