For the dimensionless half-harmonic oscillator −ψ′′+x2ψ=λψ on x>0 with ψ(0)=0, the trial family xe−αx, α>0, is admissible for the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle. The moments ∫0∞xne−2αxdx=n!/(2α)n+1 give norm squared 1/(4α3), derivative energy 1/(4α), and potential energy 3/(4α5). Its Rayleigh quotient is α2+3/α2, minimized at α=31/4. The resulting upper bound 23 exceeds the exact lowest eigenvalue three; the exact ground-state shape is xe−x2/2.
