A fixed-endpoint variation of a curve γ:[a,b]→S is a smooth family Γ(s,t) with Γ(0,t)=γ(t), Γ(s,a)=γ(a) and Γ(s,b)=γ(b). Its variation vector field V(t)=∂sΓ(0,t) vanishes at the endpoints. Consequently integration by parts in the first variation of energy of a curve has no boundary contribution, and stationarity is characterized by the geodesic equation.
