Every closed connected orientable three-manifold is obtained by integer Dehn surgery on a finite framed link in the three-sphere. Compare a Heegaard splitting with a standard splitting of the sphere, factor their gluing difference using the Lickorish-Dehn theorem, and realize each twist by unit surgery on a distinct level of a collar of the splitting surface.
For an oriented 3-manifold, take the linear span of isotopy classes of framed links, including the empty link, and impose the local bracket smoothing relation and the trivial-circle relation with factor . Fixing framed boundary endpoints gives its relative version. Gluing manifolds or stacking cylinders induces maps between skein modules; framed isotopy, rather than unframed Reidemeister-I invariance, is built into this construction.
Kirby diagram 2026-10-14
A Kirby diagram depicts a handle decomposition of a four-dimensional manifold using a framed link for the two-handles and dotted circles for the one-handles. The framing specifies the attaching normal directions; it controls the resulting intersection form and the boundary Dehn surgery.
An index- handle in dimension is . A handle attachment glues its attaching region to a corresponding neighborhood in the boundary of the preceding manifold with boundary. Besides the embedding of the attaching sphere, one specifies a framing of an embedded sphere, namely the normal-disk directions used in this gluing. Corners are then smoothed.
In dimension four, a two-handle is and attaches along . Its attaching circle is a knot in the boundary of the zero-handle . Identify that boundary with and remove a point away from the circles to draw them in . Disjoint attaching circles give a framed link. Each integer records the twist of its normal framing relative to the zero Seifert framing; the integer is also the linking number of the circle and its framed push-off. The resulting boundary change is Dehn surgery on a framed link. This is the two-handle part of a Kirby diagram.
For , use the following explicit handle decomposition. Write each factor as two disks, , glued along their boundary circles. The four product pieces give
The first is a four-dimensional zero-handle after rounding its corners. Its boundary is the union of the solid tori and . The two middle product pieces attach along these tori. Their attaching circles and form the standard Hopf link, with linking number one after choosing orientations.
Both framings are zero. For example, the normal disk of is the second disk factor. Its constant normal push-off has linking number zero with the original circle: the circle bounds in the four-ball, and a parallel push-off bounds a disjoint translated disk. Thus the framed self-intersection is zero; the same argument applies with the factors interchanged. These product framings are the zero Seifert framings.
After these two two-handles, the remaining product piece is a four-ball. Its boundary is exactly the boundary of the assembled first three pieces, so it attaches as a four-handle. Equivalently, zero surgery on the Hopf link gives , which this handle caps. We have therefore constructed the actual product, proving
There are no one- or three-handles. As a check, the two factor spheres have self-intersection zero and meet once, giving the intersection form . The explicit product construction, rather than the intersection form alone, identifies the smooth four-manifold. This is the zero-framed Hopf-link handle decomposition of the sphere product.
The Lickorish-Dehn theorem says that every orientation-preserving homeomorphism of a compact connected orientable surface, fixing its boundary pointwise, is isotopic relative to the boundary to a finite product of Dehn twists and their inverses about simple closed curves. Boundary-parallel curves are permitted. For a closed surface of genus , a finite collection of curves suffices to generate its mapping class group. If boundary components are allowed to be permuted, twists alone do not express those permutations; the boundary condition is part of the precise statement.
The fundamental theorem of Dehn surgery asserts that every closed connected orientable three-manifold is integer surgery on a finite framed link in . To prove it, first choose a Heegaard splitting of of genus . Existence of such splittings is a standard background result: a triangulation, with spanning trees collapsed in its primal and dual one-skeletons, gives complementary regular neighborhoods of finite graphs, hence two handlebodies. Choose a standard genus- splitting of , formed by stabilizing its genus-zero splitting. Identify the two pairs of handlebodies. If is the sphere's gluing map and is the gluing map for , then is an orientation-preserving self-homeomorphism of the common surface. The Lickorish-Dehn theorem writes it, up to isotopy, as a product , .
Here is the local surgery mechanism. Place on an intermediate level of a product collar of the surface. Its tubular neighborhood has longitude given by that surface and meridian around the normal disk. Remove the neighborhood and fill with meridian slope . Cut the remaining annular neighborhood of along a transverse arc. Going around the new meridian now makes one extra positive or negative turn in the longitude direction. On gluing the cut annulus back, the two collar levels are therefore identified by , precisely the Dehn twist from part (a). Outside this annulus the identification is unchanged. This proves unit surface-framed surgery realizes a Dehn twist; its surgery coefficient is or relative to the surface framing, with sign fixed by the chosen normal convention.
Put the curves on distinct collar levels and order those levels to realize the indicated composition. They are disjoint as curves in the three-manifold even if their surface projections intersect. Performing the prescribed surgeries replaces by , up to isotopy. An isotopy of a gluing map extends across a collar, so the filled manifold is homeomorphic to .
Finally each surface framing differs from the preferred longitude framing in by an integer number of twists. Thus its coefficient becomes an integer coefficient in the usual knot longitude convention. These finitely many disjoint curves form the required framed link :
The ingredients used were Heegaard-splitting existence, the stated twist-generation theorem, and the explicit local unit-surgery construction.
A Heegaard splitting of a closed oriented three-manifold is a decomposition into two handlebodies, with their common boundary the Heegaard surface . With boundary present, the corresponding pieces are compression bodies, whose negative boundaries account for .
For the given triangulation, take the barycentric subdivision. A regular neighbourhood of the original one-skeleton is a handlebody: thicken vertices to balls and edges to one-handles, then contract a spanning tree. The complementary region is a regular neighbourhood of the dual one-skeleton, whose vertices are tetrahedron centres and whose edges cross triangular faces. It too is a handlebody. Both graphs are connected, and their common boundary supplies the Heegaard splitting. If the original triangulation has vertices and edges, its Heegaard surface has genus ; the dual count gives the same number by .
Choose an oriented meridian of a knot and the Seifert longitude supplied by a Seifert surface for the null-homologous knot. For relatively prime integers , rational Dehn surgery removes the interior of a tubular neighborhood and attaches a solid torus with its meridian of a solid torus on the unoriented slope . The choices and describe the same slope; is the original meridional filling. The boundary gluing reverses boundary orientation so that the oriented three-manifold extends across the filling.
For integral coefficients , attach two-handles to along the components of the framed link, with their indicated Seifert framing shifts. The boundary operation removes and inserts , with meridian . Thus the compact oriented surgery trace satisfies
For a finite rational coefficient, use a negative continued fraction
Replace that component by an integrally framed chain of successive meridians with coefficients . Repeated slam-dunk moves give back . Perform this replacement for every rationally framed component, leaving meridional fillings out. The resulting integral framed link has the same filled boundary, so its surgery trace proves that every such rational filling bounds a compact oriented four-manifold.
