The metric defines this globally smooth Hamiltonian on the cotangent bundle. With ω=dxi∧dpi and ιXHω=dH, its Hamiltonian vector field projects to affinely parametrized geodesics. The momentum is pi=gijx˙j, and its conserved value is half the squared speed.
