For a Neumann-Dirichlet open-string boundary condition, the transverse modes have frequencies r∈Z+1/2. The canonical commutation relations give [αri,αsj]=rδijδr+s,0 and αr†=α−r. One derivation expands X−y=∑r>0qrcos(rσ): spatial orthogonality reduces the Polyakov action to (8α′)−1∫∑r(q˙r2−r2qr2)dτ. These are harmonic oscillators of mass 1/(4α′), whose normalized creation operators satisfy α−r=irar† in the conventional phased expansion.
