Perturb the Hamiltonian blow-up of a reflection-symmetric double-zero point by u′=−sv+v3/2+ε(μ−v2/2)u+O(ε2) and v′=2u+ε(μ−v2/2)v+O(ε2). Then H′=ε(μ−v2/2)(2u2+sv2−v4/2)+O(ε2). On the positive heteroclinic branch dt=dv/[2(s−v2/2)], so its first energy change is εM/2, where M=∫−2s2s(μ−v2/2)(s+v2/2)dv. A simple zero gives cancellation of the leading stable/unstable manifold splitting and continues to a nearby heteroclinic bifurcation. Since ∂M/∂μ>0, there is a unique first-order balance for fixed s>0.
