The conservative equation u′′=u2−a2 has a saddle loop with v+(u)=2/3(a−u)u+2a for −2a≤u≤a. Its homoclinic orbit integrals are I0=2∫−2aav+(u)du and I1=2∫−2aauv+(u)du. Substitution s=u+2a evaluates them as displayed. For a weak perturbation ε(β+u)u′, integrating the energy derivative gives βI0+I1=0, hence β=5a/7. The nonzero derivative I0 makes this a simple first-order splitting zero.
