Magnetic resonance imaging with a prepared nuclear population imbalance exceeding ordinary thermal polarization under the imaging conditions. Dynamic nuclear polarization, optical spin transfer and spin-order transfer offer different preparation routes. Preparation and acquisition must account for spin-lattice relaxation, which erases the excess polarization.
