For a closed immersion i:Z↪X, the ideal sheaf is the kernel IZ/X​=ker(OX​→i∗​OZ​). It therefore fits into the short exact sequence of sheaves
0⟶IZ/X​⟶OX​⟶i∗​OZ​⟶0.
