Inelastic X-ray scattering measures energy and momentum transferred from X-rays to matter. With sufficiently high energy resolution, it can map a phonon dispersion relation by measuring inelastic peaks at different momentum transfers. Crystal momentum is determined modulo a reciprocal lattice vector.
