Interplanetary scintillation is rapid variation in the received strength of a compact astronomical radio source, produced by propagation through fluctuating Electron density in the solar wind. Its dependence on source angular size can help distinguish compact sources. It is a propagation effect, distinct from intrinsic periodic emission by a pulsar.
