A Jordan basis is a basis consisting of Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors for a linear operator. Its matrix is in Jordan normal form. Over the complex numbers every finite-dimensional linear operator has such a basis; a real matrix with nonreal eigenvalues requires complexification for this form.
