If Φ˙=A(t)Φ and Φ(0)=I, differentiation of the determinant gives detΦ(t)=exp(∫0t​trA(s)ds). For a planar periodic orbit this gives the nontrivial Floquet multiplier, since the tangent multiplier is one.
