Suppose continuous functions fn:R→R converge pointwise to f. For each ϵ>0, some nonempty open interval I and integer N satisfy ∣fn(x)−f(x)∣≤ϵ for every x∈I and n≥N. Indeed the closed sets QN=⋂n,m≥N{∣fn−fm∣≤ϵ} cover R. The Baire category theorem gives an interval inside one QN, and passing m→∞ proves the assertion. The interval may depend on ϵ; this does not assert uniform convergence on one fixed interval.
