For a three-dimensional ideal gas with quadratic dispersion and fixed particle number, the total density of states at the Fermi energy is g(EF)=3N/(2EF). The Sommerfeld coefficient then gives CV=(π2/2)NkB(T/TF) to leading order, where TF=EF/kB. The fixed-number energy correction is ΔU=(π2/4)N(kBT)2/EF. Only states near the Fermi surface change occupation, explaining the small active fraction.
